Rocky Mountain Buffalo Company was founded in 1998
by the Downey family. The Golden based ranch and bison
business was acquired originally as a base camp for
Sanctuary Wilderness School and Retreat.
Visitors to the ranch could feast on buffalo and wild
game. It was because of the positive feedback of visitors,
and repeated successes at a local Farmers Market that
the Downey’s were prompted to expand the buffalo
business and provide this superior product to more
conscientious consumers concerned with their health,
sustainable agriculture, clean vibrant food, and how
this contributed to the Earth.
Rocky
Mountain Buffalo Company has evolved out of Sanctuary,
which was intended as an offering of sacred space
for visitors. Offering sacred food, meaning food that
is pure, full of vitality, raised as naturally as
possible, with spiritual ethics was a natural evolution
of the original vision.
The
company logo honors the history and tradition that
many Native Americans had and still have with buffalo.
The buffalo was and is sacred food, Rocky Mountain
Buffalo Company respects and carries on this tradition.
There is an intimate relationship the Downey's have
with the land and buffalo, and it is this that ties
them to ancient ways. The Downey's appreciate that
it is thanks to family ranchers like Walking Coyote
and Pablo Allard that buffalo have come back from
near extinction. There are presently close to a million
buffalo in North America and the population is growing
by 40% a year!
The Downey’s commitment to quality starts with
a careful study and reverence for the cycles of nature.
Their management practices work in harmony with the
natural instincts, biology, and wild nature of buffalo.
The
ranch can sustain about 50 head, which is the average
size of private buffalo herds in Canada. The demand
for this quality meat soon outgrew what the ranch
was able to provide, so the Downey’s also work
with other ranches raising buffalo naturally.
An
important part of their success comes from the personal
relationships that are developed with clients and
customers. Rocky Mountain Buffalo Ranch is a transparent
business with farm gate sales and open doors for customers.
They value each customer as a friend, and are committed
to doing everything they can to deserve that friendship
for the long term.
Rocky Mountain Buffalo Company has expanded it’s
service and products to the U.S. markets, primarily
to California where the Downey's hale from. It can
export internationally subject to volume.
As a value-led business Rocky Mountain Buffalo Company
gives a portion of profits back to the local community
and other non-profit organizations dedicated to children,
peace, health, and environmental preservation. Sanctuary
Retreat, operated as well by the Downey’s on
the ranch, also offers many of its programs on a donation
basis.
